Have you ever wondered where all the good, basic, entry-level dildos are? Wonder no more! If you want an easy starter dil, the Tantus Silk is your go-to. I received it in a Medium size for this review, and it could practically fit in the shallow pocket of a pair of lady-jeans. Not that I've tried -- pants are the tools of the oppressor and I refuse to consort with them. But it's an entertaining image.
This dildo is short and slender, with no features other than a slight upward curve and a flat, circular base. The silicone is fairly firm and has a smooth, silky finish, as the name implies. In terms of malleability, there’s a tiny bit of squishy give but it’s definitely on the firmer side. It feels slightly more rigid and denser than the Fun Factory Amor, but the Amor is also thicker so retains some heft despite this. You can see why Tantus markets the Silk as a starting dildo – it's non-representational, body-safe, and a really great size for warming up and easy penetration. To be honest, I sort of wish this had been my starter insertable when I was getting used to the idea of internal stimulation. I used to have some mixed feelings about penetration and still don’t really dig representational or particularly girthy toys, and some people may feel the same with their first dildos as well.
As for use, it’s really easy to insert even without lube due to the size, natural curve and the drag-free smoothness of the silicone. I’m still a forever fan of coconut oil as lube because it just makes everything objectively better for me, but you could also use water-based if you like – just not silicone lube, as the two don’t generally play well together. My previous experiences with the matte silicone Amor had led me to expect a little more friction than the Silk provides, which only solidifies my impression of this as a wonderfully easy starting toy. Yet it still manages not to disappoint – something about the firmness of the silicone really works out; providing a more solid surface for grinding/thrusting and making it feel a little more substantial than it actually is.
Still, those who prefer larger insertables will probably be disappointed with this unassuming dildo, in which case I suggest investigating the size up. The Silk Large is also slightly more bulbous at the end compared to the Small and Medium counterparts, which creates a more varied dimension that some people may enjoy.
Despite all that, this "basic" little toy really is a lot of fun to play with. I can definitely see it being used as a warm-up to something larger, or as the main event if you’re feeling tender for whatever reason. Those with vaginismus, penetration-related anxiety, or other similar concerns may well find that this suits their needs perfectly. I found the Medium size a tiny bit too flexible for my preferences, but still feel the silicone density is a good middle-of-the-road firmness that almost everyone will be able to enjoy. Also, I think it would be really excellent for those working up to feeling comfortable with anal play, although it may be a little too short for pegging – the harness tends to remove a bit of length, and as it’s already a pretty stubby lil toy it may not result in the recipient of said pegging getting all that much out of the experience.
My only qualm isn’t with the toy itself; it’s just a matter of personal preference. I tend to enjoy A-spot stimulation (check out Kate Sloan’s post on this erogenous zone here), which I can kind of get with the Amor – barely, due to its similarly diminutive length. But trying the same thing with the Silk doesn't quite work out, even though it appeared to hit a similar spot. Eventually, I realised that it wasn’t the length that was the issue; it was the shape of the dildo. Despite their similar lengths, the Amor has a slightly tapered tip that seems to be more effective at getting into the A-spot area without jabbing my cervix. The Silk has no such taper to it, and the blunt, featureless end doesn’t seem to do me many favours (unlike my current star A-spotter, the Yoni Eggs Obsidian Wand).
It’s a very slight discomfort, but it’s enough to prevent this from being a particularly A-spotty toy – it's just too rounded. Kate says she often prefers longer, slimmer insertables with upward-slanted tips for this exact reason, and I’m inclined to agree.
Nevertheless, the Silk is a fun little internal toy to have in your collection as it’s perfect for less invasive play. I love how straight-up effortless it is to use and the disproportionate amount of enjoyment it provides.
